Getting off on the right foot with your home based business is critical to your success and whether you have been involved in a network marketing home business before or not (if not, then you are lucky because you have the opportunity to keep yourself from learning what 95% of new people do – bad and inefficient habits), what I am going to share is the main reason people who succeed in network marketing home businesses have long term success.

Now to start, you may have been told by your sponsor or upline to build a list of friends and family, invite them to learn about your business, setup a home presentation and have a three way call to close them on joining you.  When starting out, this is completely wrong and I will explain why.

Should you ever follow this old school method?  Absolutely….BUT not until you have some success in your business already.  Why?  Because once you have success, it is much easier to approach your friends and family with the likelihood that a larger percentage than normal may join your new business.

Let’s face it, most people want proof that something works – that’s human nature and your friends and family are no different.

When you are brand new, approaching them without having any success to show, they will naturally be skeptical and hesitant.

Plus you risk the possibility of alienating someone you care about:  “I’m not sure we want to invite Mary to our holiday dinner this year.  She keeps trying to push these vitamins on us.”  Or “Don’t answer the phone, it’s her again.  I’ve told her a million times I’m not interested.”

Once you run through your list, then what?  The point here is to follow the path of least resistance and when you have some success under your belt, this step of inviting friends and family is much easier.

Instead, your focus should be on identifying and building leaders, people who you can mentor to follow your steps to success.  Leaders are your building blocks, the frontline of your business and finding great ones is the key to working smarter, vs. harder.

But how do I find great leaders? This is actually simpler than most people give it credit and involves a few strategies that are easy to do.

In another post I will go into the nuts and bolts of how to specifically find people to connect with, but for now, just understand the following:

1)    You are going to create your own brand, You Inc, that will attract people to you.
2)    Find people in your niche that you can connect to and network with.
3)    You are not going to try to sell these people anything UNTIL you have established a relationship.

By following these 3 steps to start, you will find people that (a) are more receptive to your offer when you present it and (b) are more likely to attract more people to you.

Now get out there and build some relationships!
